Common Questions

Stairlift Questions We Hear Most

Straight answers on cost, timing and what a stairlift does to your staircase — including the parts people are usually too polite to ask about.

How much does a stairlift cost in Seattle?

Most installed stairlifts run $4,500 to $15,000. A straight staircase sits at the lower end because the rail is a stock length cut to fit. A curved staircase needs a rail manufactured specifically for your stairs, and that single difference is what moves the price to the top of the range — not the chair.

Our Seattle and Bellevue stairlift guide compares the models we install.

How long does installation take?

A straight stairlift is usually a single visit, often just a few hours, and you can use it the same day.

A curved stairlift takes longer overall because the rail is built to your staircase after we measure it. Expect a few weeks between survey and install day — then, again, about a day on site.

Will a stairlift damage my staircase?

The rail fastens to the stair treads, not to your wall or bannister. That matters in Seattle's older housing — a Queen Anne or Capitol Hill staircase with original millwork is left structurally untouched, and the fixing points can be filled and finished if the lift is ever removed.

Can a stairlift fit a curved or narrow staircase?

Yes to both. Curved rails are manufactured to follow your exact staircase, including turns, intermediate landings and changes in pitch.

For narrow flights, the seat, arms and footrest fold up to roughly a foot of depth against the wall, which usually keeps the stairs comfortably walkable for everyone else in the house.

Does a stairlift work in a power outage?

Yes. Stairlifts run on batteries that recharge whenever the chair is parked at a charging point, so an outage doesn't strand anyone mid-flight. It's a reasonable thing to ask about here — Seattle windstorms take power out often enough that it comes up most winters.

Do I need a permit for a stairlift?

Permitting for residential stairlifts is considerably simpler than for an elevator, but what's required depends on where you are: Seattle keeps jurisdiction over its own elevator code inside city limits, while Eastside addresses fall to Washington State Labor & Industries.

We confirm what your specific installation needs and handle any filing as part of the job.
